Navigating Stress During the Holidays: A Gentler Way Through

In brief: A gentler holiday plan starts with realistic commitments, an affordable budget and room for mixed emotions. It does not require you to feel cheerful on demand.

Choose what matters this year

A holiday can be meaningful without reproducing every tradition. Choose one or two things you want to make space for, then look at the time, money and energy available. A quiet visit, a familiar meal or a phone call can be enough. These are planning choices, not a test of gratitude or resilience.

Make boundaries concrete

Instead of a vague promise to do less, decide when you will arrive and leave, what you can spend and which requests you can decline. A simple response such as “I can come for an hour” is often clearer than a long explanation. Agree on gift expectations before making purchases. Leave space between commitments rather than assuming every free hour is available.

Allow grief and rest

Celebration can coexist with sadness, grief or loneliness. You do not have to force a particular emotional response. If a gathering feels overwhelming, consider a shorter visit or a different way to connect. Leave room for an ordinary meal, a quiet evening or a familiar routine without turning every pause into another task to perform.

When extra support matters

Self-care is only one part of looking after yourself. NIMH explains when ongoing or severe symptoms warrant professional help. If distress disrupts daily life, speak with a qualified professional rather than relying on a holiday checklist.
